Is it true that there is an animal called
"Baka" (馬鹿) in Japanese? #shorts #animals

Is it true that there is an animal called
"Baka" (馬鹿) in Japanese? Don't worry, it's
not the term for a fool, but rather it's pronounced "Umashika" (馬鹿), referring to a species within the bovine family. Although the
name may sound a bit peculiar, it's not a combination of horses and deer;
rather, it's an independent species within the Bovidae family, similar to
medium-sized African cattle like Eland and Wildebeest. In places like India,
this Umashika is also known as Nilgai, a herbivorous mammal belonging to the
bovine family. Despite being preyed upon by tigers in India, their population
is not significantly low.
Umashika exhibits a unique social
structure. A dominant male forms a harem with around 5 to 15 females, and the
harem's male mates with all the females. Whether in the wild or captivity,
Umashika consistently forms harems. If another male attempts to mate and
intrudes the harem, the dominant male strives to expel the intruder, leading to
intense battles between males over the females. These conflicts involve
aggressive behaviors such as headbutting and clashing with horns, sometimes
resulting in fatalities for the defeated male. If a new male emerges
victorious, the harem becomes his, allowing him to mate with all the females.
It's a harsh social structure where only the strong males get to mate with the
females.
Though the name Umashika may sound
peculiar, the dominant males lead enviable lives. This interesting insight
comes from a zoo veterinarian's knowledge.
