Their tongue moves at an astonishing speed of approximately 160 times per minute, which is a defense mechanism to avoid retaliation from the ants. Giant anteaters rely on their sense of smell to locate ant mounds. Upon discovery, they use the three claws on their folded front legs to dig into the hard surface of the ant mound. Once a hole is created, they insert their snout and use their long tongue, which can reach up to 60 centimeters, to capture the prey. The tongue is coated with a sticky saliva, allowing them to gather and ingest ants that have clustered due to the disturbance. However, they do not consume an entire ant mound in one go. After eating a sufficient amount, they move on to another mound, exhibiting a behavior of managing feeding locations. The broken ant mounds are diligently repaired overnight by worker ants.
