In the deep sea, bioluminescent organisms are abundant.

The phenomenon of organisms emitting light is called "bioluminescence." There are various types of organisms that exhibit bioluminescence, including jellyfish, squid, and fireflies, which are also known in terrestrial environments. Many marine organisms possess this unique ability, and in the particular conditions of the deep sea, microorganisms and fish especially display highly developed forms of this phenomenon.

The reason deep-sea organisms utilize bioluminescence is due to the challenging environment of the deep ocean floor, where normal illumination from sunlight is limited.

The deep sea is an extremely dark environment, and the penetration of sunlight into the seawater is restricted to shallow depths. Light is absorbed by water, and as a result, very little reaches the deep sea. Therefore, deep-sea organisms need alternative means to illuminate their surroundings and acquire information.

Bioluminescence serves both predation and defense purposes for deep-sea organisms. Predators can easily spot prey emitting light, and the prey, in turn, can attract others by producing light, forming large groups. On the other hand, some deep-sea organisms use light to deceive and defend against predators.

Deep-sea organisms also employ bioluminescence for communication among individuals of the same species or group. For example, they use light during mating or to signal their positions to each other. This becomes a crucial means for finding companions in the darkness of the deep sea.

The bioluminescence of deep-sea organisms may occur not only in the visible light spectrum but also in a wide range of wavelengths, including ultraviolet and infrared. This enables the exchange of information in areas where other organisms cannot see.

Bioluminescence is a highly unique and essential adaptation strategy for deep-sea organisms, contributing to the overall ecosystem in the depths of the ocean.
