ボノボ（ピグミーチンパンジー）は、チンパンジーとともにヒト科に分類される霊長類の一種です。ボノボは人類と最も近縁の共通の祖先を持つと考えられています。中央アフリカの熱帯雨林地域に生息しています。ボノボはチンパンジーよりもヒトに近く、細身で脚が長い傾向があり、直立二足歩行が可能です。顔は黒く、唇はピンク色をしています。
ボノボは高い知能を持ち、工具を使ったり、問題を解決するために協力します。人の手で育てられたボノボは、子供のころまで自分が人間だと思っていることがあります。大きくなって自分が人間ではないことがわかると、ショックでしばらく落ち込みます。これは私がアメリカのサンディエゴ動物園で獣医師として働いていた時にも経験しました。ボノボは人を識別できます。動物園のボノボたちは私が獣医師であることを知っていて、人の集団の中に私を見つけると、近寄ってきました。
ボノボは限定的ながら人間の言葉や手話を理解できます。高い知能とコミュニケーション能力があります。遊びの時間を大切にし、社会的な結束を強化し、個体間の信頼関係を築くのに重要です。特に若いボノボは頻繁に遊びます。
ボノボの社会構造では、性行動が重要なコミュニケーション手段となっています。性行動は緊張を和らげ、紛争を解決し、社会的な結束を促進します。ボノボの社会は比較的平和で協力的なものです。
生息地の破壊、密猟、そして人間との接触による疾病により、ボノボは絶滅の脅威にさらされています。現地ではボノボの肉は美味しいと言われています。保護活動が必要です。
▽鳥吉英伸 略歴：
東京大学大学院医学系研究科で博士課程を卒業し、医学博士および獣医師の資格を取得。さらに、アメリカ獣医師会および米国カリフォルニア州獣医師会のメンバーでもある。また、獣医科大学大学院で教鞭を執り、動物病院の院長も務めている。
彼はアメリカのフロリダ州シーワールド水族館やカリフォルニア州サンディエゴ動物園などで獣医師としての経験を積み、様々な動物種（哺乳類、鳥類、爬虫類、両生類、魚類、昆虫、無脊椎動物）の治療に携わってきました。その腕前は世界中で高く評価され、彼は二万もの動物種の治療に貢献しています。

working as a veterinarian at the San Diego Zoo. Bonobos can recognize

approach me when spotting me in a crowd.

and sign language is limited, bonobos possess high intelligence and
communication skills. Playtime is crucial for them, fostering social bonds and
building trust among individuals, especially among young bonobos who engage in
frequent play.
In the social structure of bonobos, sexual
behavior serves as a crucial means of communication. It alleviates tension,
resolves conflicts, and promotes social cohesion. Bonobo societies are
relatively peaceful and cooperative.
Habitat destruction, poaching, and diseases
from human contact pose threats to the survival of bonobos. In local areas,
bonobo meat is considered a delicacy. Conservation efforts are imperative.
